Research Group Meeting - Monday, November 17th, 2014

Initially, on the penultimate meeting of 2014, Jorge Postiga - Master Degree student from PMDA-UP, presented the findings of his dissertation that tried to understand the factors that influence the effectiveness of planning and execution of the strategy in Brazilian small and medium companies. The study was conducted based on the database from a program managed by Sebrae – Serviço Brasileiro de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas (Brazilian Service of Support to the Micro and Small Enterprises) called Sebrae Mais – Programa Sebrae Para Empresas Avançadas (Sebrae Plus – Sebrae Program for Advanced Enterprises), which developed a management model based on indicators and targets named Ferramentas de Gestão Avançada (Advanced Management Tools). The methodology used to test the theoretical proposed model was the Case Study where 8 companies of a population of 11 participated in the research. Among the research findings it can be highlighted: 1) the proposed theoretical model helped to explain the “why” of the effectiveness of planning in the implementation of strategies; 2) companies that best met or approached the categories proposed in the model also had more effective implementation of planning.
In a second moment, Álvaro Argemiro, a Master Degree student from PMDA-UP, presented his research findings that intend to understand if the Practices of Professional Performance Evaluation in a publicly owned company are related to the Organizational Results. Alvaro shared with the group the difficulties that he had to get the database for his statistical analyses and now, with the data in his hands, he can refine the statistical analysis and deepen the theoretical base that supports the whole work. In  mid-February 2015 we will see the final results of Alvaro’s work during his official presentation to the examining board.
The final evaluation of the meeting was positive and involved the active participation of the presents in order to understand and contribute to the continuous improvement of the researches. Prof. Bruno, the group Leader, emphasized that the importance of these presentations is the awakening of ideas for future works for master and doctoral students that are dealing with research problem definition. Another objective is to join forces and work together in parallel researches that, somehow, complement the presented works.

Research Group Meeting - Monday, October 20th, 2014

In this meeting, the PhD student Augusto Machado presented the evolution of his thesis research that deals with understanding the Inter-organizational Relations, Organizational Competences and Results of Innovation in Industrial Organizations located in Parana State. He showed the preliminary survey data and some previous scenarios that have used descriptive statistics, but suggests the use of more robust statistical techniques to better understand the object of study.
Augusto also shared with us the reason for his interest in the topic that has his professional and academic experience as background. Augusto immersed during two years in the Bússola da Inovação Industrial do Estado do Paraná (State of Paraná Industrial Innovation Compass) project design promoted by the Federação das Indústrias do Paraná. The result of this project was the development of the Índice Paranaense de Inovação -IPrI (State of Panará Innovation index) consisting of three pillars: innovation efforts, management and innovation outcomes, which will drive Augusto’s PhD thesis.

The meeting was very productive and had intense participation of the presents in order to understand the presented thesis problem and discuss gaps on theory, methodology and data treatment and presentation. Regarding the data presentation and the statistical models that will guide the research, we highlighted the speech of Prof. Bruno, the Group Leader: "good statistical models are parsimonious, meaning they are made of a few variables. Models under those parameters tend to be robust in order to talk a lot with few words."

In a few months we will have updated news on findings and developments of Augusto’s thesis.
